It has been brought to my attention that some people have been having lag issues and that they'd like to have some assistance with changing the DNS servers they use to help better their connection (If only slightly) to the server.
Before I detail how to do this let me first start by saying this isn't a guaranteed fix, all it does is connection your computer to the same DNS server that our server connects to-- in a sense shortening the path between point A and B. Your internet connection is still a huge part in this so if you're on a slow connection there isn't much I can do.
Now, let's begin.
Note: This is for windows only. trying to follow on apple will lead you to nothing but confusion and heart ache and maybe bad gas.
first thing you will need to do is open your start menu (little button at the bottom left of your screen that may or may not say "start" (depending on your operating system))
Somewhere in there you should see "Control Panel", that's what you're looking for so go ahead and open it up.
You'll see an option that says "network and internet" in vista and 7, if you're on XP it will be "network and internet connections", open it up and you'll see something that looks a little scary in vista and 7 but you should find "network status and tasks"
CLICK. CLICK FOR YOUR LIIIIVVVESSSS. In XP You're looking for essentially the same thing.
once you're there you should see a listing of all the network connections to your computer, if there are more than two, God help you. . . just kidding, You're looking for the one called "Local Area Connection" or "Local Area Network" It'll be one of the two, never both, sometimes half.
Click on it and a little window will pop up with all sorts of number. Tell it shut up by clicking on the properties button, a new little window will open up. Say hello and look in the list it presents for "Internet Protocol", on vista and 7 it will be Internet protocol version IPv4
And while I could detail for several hours what the difference between ipv4 and ipv6 is, that would be pointless.
Click it and yet another little window will open up (little bastards are multiplying!!), there you will see two greyed out areas, one for "IP address" and one for "DNS servers" ignore IP, bad things will happen if you mess with IP. No, this time I'm not joking, bad things will happen.
So instead, click "use the following dns server" circle and in the two fields put
8 . 8 . 8 . 8
and in the second
8 . 8 . 4 . 4
Apply the changes and you're almost done!
Now you will hi the button with the windows logo on it, between ctrl and alt, and hold it then press R
A new window will open up called "the command prompt"
Once you see this I have full access to your computer and you lose the game. Kidding
Now you're going to type in two simple commands to make sure the changes are in place. First you type
ipconfig /release
exactly like that.
Next, type
ipconfig /renew
you will lose internet connection after the first command, THIS IS NORMAL, DON'T PANIC.
All it is doing is "releasing" the ipaddress currently assigned to your computer as well as all other network settings.
The command to renew it will do exactly that. Renew the settings.
A bunch of gibberish will appear about your settings, none of it which is anything particularly interesting or useful.
And with that having been done, you're finished!
